The Art of Disappearing by Naomi Shihab Nye
When they say Don't I know you?
say no.
When they invite you to the party
remember what parties are like
before answering.
Someone telling you in a loud voice
they once wrote a poem.
Greasy sausage balls on a paper plate.
Then reply.
If they say We should get together
say why?
It's not that you don't love them anymore.
You're trying to remember something
too important to forget.
Trees. The monastery bell at twilight.
Tell them you have a new project.
It will never be finished.
When someone recognizes you in a grocery store
nod briefly and become a cabbage.
When someone you haven't seen in ten years
appears at the door,
don't start singing him all your new songs.
You will never catch up.
Walk around feeling like a leaf.
Know you could tumble any second.
Then decide what to do with your time.

A good one!
Hi cstern! Thanks for stopping by! Yes, I love this poem. I keep it in a frame in my writing room...
A pleasure stopping by. It's a lovely poem and so right on. I stumbled on your blog and have enjoyed reading it. You have a nice way with words Annie. You must be a very interesting person.
My goodness, CS, you have made my day. Thank you very much. Interesting? Depends on who you talk to in these parts...LOL Seriously, though, I do appreciate your taking the time to comment. I regret that I have not been writing every day as I did when the year was young. I often left life interfere with my writing...but knowing you are stopping by, I will do my best to write at least twice a week. OK, once a week. Obviously, I need to re-read the poem. Again, thank you!
Glad to have made your day Annie and yes you should write at least once a week to keep your skills honed. A writer who has talent should keep it alive.
In the photo array of the Bitch Blvd pic which one are you?
